And in real life endings aren’t always neat, whether they’re happy endings, or whether they’re sad endings. Each of Stephen King's novels is impeccable in its own right, but some are certainly better than others. King has quickly become known as the king of literary horror, with a legacy that could make his last name the definition of the genre. Over the years, he has written screenplays with his son Joe Hill - of NOS4A2 and Locke & Key fame - and co-authored a novel with his youngest son, Owen King, titled Sleeping Beauties. The link to the original one is here, and all credit goes to u/LaYerbaMate for the original idea (as far Im concerned). King also commonly collaborates with other writers. There are numerous upcoming King stories in development to become a series or movie. Movie adaptations of Stephen King books are released at the same frequency as his literary tales, with at least one making its debut every year since 1980. Carrie was his first movie adaptation, but it was nowhere near last. Over his 50 years of writing, King has authored over 200 short stories and novellas, as well as 65 novels. The Bibendum Celeste appears to be a celestial Michelin man. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Kurt stennIn addition to expelling the biological basis and the evolutionary history of hair, the fiber is put into context: hair in history (as tied to textile mills and merchant associations), hair as a construct for cultural and self-identity, hair in the arts (as the material for artist's brushes and musical instruments), hair as commodity (used for everything from the inner lining of tennis balls to an absorbent to clean up oil spills), and hair as evidence in criminology. In Hair, Kurt Stenn ? one of the world's foremost hair follicle experts ? takes readers on global journey through history, from fur merchant associations and sheep farms to medical clinics and patient support groups, to show the remarkable impact hair has had on human life.įrom a completely bald beauty queen with alopecia to the famed hair-hang circus act, Stenn weaves the history of hair through a variety of captivating examples, with sources varying from renaissance merchants’ diaries to interviews with wig makers, modern barbers, and more. Most people don't give a second thought to the stuff on their head, but hair has played a crucial role in in fashion, the arts, sports, commerce, forensics, and industry. A microhistory in the vein of Salt and Cod exploring the biological, evolutionary, and cultural history of one of the world's most fascinating fibers. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Death on the nile agathaThe elements were certainly all in place. So I found myself in Egypt on a tour with Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours – a tour I like to call “Agatha Christie and Me.” I had brought along an old, dog-eared copy of her 1937 novel, and yearned for the same mystery while on my journey. In it, her famous detective Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard the glamorous river steamer Karnak turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. I had been seduced by this ancient land ever since I read Agatha Christie’s mysteries as a teenager and watched earlier film adaptations of this thriller. Just before the pandemic closed most international borders, I was able to take a Death on the Nile cruise, which admittedly, wasn’t out of character. Agatha Christie`s classic 1937 mystery, Death on the Nile, is the perfect read when cruising the epic river. 5/28/2023 0 Comments The bone collector book seriesMagnifying Glass An icon of a magnifying glass. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this memoir is the gracious and compassionate eye with which Hilton views her past. Hilton cites examples of her own as well as those of longtime friend Britney Spears. She also points out that society is beginning to acknowledge the media’s relentlessly exploitative treatment of famous teenagers, especially young women. Though she still suffers from PTSD, the author has become an advocate for shutting down facilities like the ones in which she suffered. Breaking up the heartbreak are the author’s asides about her ADHD. Reading like a prison-break movie, the text chronicles multiple escape attempts, each ending in failure. However, because her parents thought she was partying too much in high school, they sent her to multiple facilities for so-called “troubled teens,” brutal institutions where occupants were subject to cavity searches, beatings, and solitary confinement. Had things gone differently, she might have been able to finish school and become the veterinarian she dreamed of becoming. Like many survivors, she took refuge in her menagerie of pets. The author is furiously candid about multiple instances of sexual abuse she suffered as an adolescent. In her debut book, Hilton, with the assistance of a ghostwriter, presents a tender and triumphant account of her life so far. One of the world’s most recognizable personalities delivers a memoir with surprising depth and purpose. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Eat and run by scott jurekI was too busy puking, then watching the stream of liquid evaporate in the circle of light from my headlamp almost as fast as it splashed down on the steaming pavement. My crew was telling me to get up, that they knew I could go on, but I could barely hear them. In his memoir Eat And Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness, Jurek opens up about his life and career - as an elite ultrarunner and a vegan - and inspires athletes at every level.ĭeath Valley had laid me out flat, and now it was cooking me. And yet, perhaps even more impressive than his extensive list of race victories and course records is the fact that he achieves these astonishing accomplishments of endurance on an entirely plant-based diet. For nearly two decades, Scott Jurek has been a dominant force - and darling - in the grueling and growing sport of ultrarunning. 5/28/2023 0 Comments M butterfly playSong then goes to France dressed as Butterfly and holding a child she claims belongs to Gallimard. Meanwhile, Song is punished for her affair with Gallimard, serving as a laborer for a few years. There, he tells his wife about Song and the two separate. When his professional aspirations are foiled, however, Gallimard is discharged and returns to France with his wife, Helga. Through Song's submissiveness, Gallimard establishes his masculine identity.Īs the affair progresses, Gallimard is promoted to vice-consul, and sets up an apartment with Song, his mistress. Song's performance is so convincing and she is so demure about showing her body, that Gallimard remains unaware of Song's true sex. Throughout their affair, Gallimard remains unaware that Song is actually a man playing the part of a woman, a spy for the Chinese Communist party, extracting information from him. Gallimard begins a relationship with Song, a relationship that mirrors the relationship in the opera between Pinkerton and Butterfly: the cruel white man and the submissive woman. Thus, he is surprised when he meets and falls in love with Chinese opera star, Song Liling, who he considers to be the embodiment of the perfect woman, a version of one of his favorite operatic characters, Madame Butterfly. He is mild mannered and considers himself to be a wimp and bad at seducing women. René Gallimard is a member of the French embassy in China. |
